VDO is the automotive spare parts group of the popular Continental AG group. It has its presence all over the world. The Continental Corporation was started in Hanover, Germany in 1871. The VDO wing of the Continental AG was started in Hanover in 2007. VDO makes high-quality and trustworthy automotive spares and accessories that make the different branded vehicles fuel efficient and safe. The VDO fuel sender unit is a very important part of the fuel system.
The fuel sending unit is located in the fuel tank of the car. It is directly attached to the fuel pump. There will be a float that normally accompanies the sending unit. This float will send the level of the fuel in the tank to show up on the fuel gauge. The VDO fuel will sender unit consists of a float that is usually made using foam. It is connected to a metal rod whose end is fixed to a variable resistor. If the fuel gauge hits a certain level, then the low fuel light will glow.
The variable resistor in the fuel tank will resist the flow of electricity. If the resistance is more, then the flow of current will be less. The wiper will be connected to the fuel gauge and this will slide along the variable resistor strip. If the wiper is close to the grounded part of this strip, the resistance will be less. The resistance will be large if the wiper is at the opposite end of the strip. In the VDO fuel sender unit, the fuel has to come down to a certain level so that the float begins to drop. The wiper on the variable resistor will move on to the negative side of the strip when the fuel float is at the top of the tank. Here, a large amount of current will pass through the center unit and then back to the fuel gauge. The float will start to sink as the level in the tank decreases. The wiper will start to move and the resistance will increase. This will make the amount of current that goes back to the fuel gauge to decrease.
