The Car Intercooler

A car intercooler is a device in a vehicle that is used to cool liquids and gasses. An intercooler is also called a heat exchanger as it removes waste heat. Heat exchangers are commonly used in turbocharged or supercharged cars to increase the efficiency of the engine by reducing induction air heat. Typically, a heat exchanger will increase the output efficiency of a combustion engine. As an example, if a car is fitted with a turbocharger it would have a heat exchanger. The design of this component can come in many different shapes and sizes and is often dependent on the space requirements within the engine compartment of a specific vehicle.

The increase in air pressure in turbocharged and supercharged vehicles usually results in an increase in heat, which can result in a reduction in performance. This is where the heat exchanger comes into play to reduce this increase in heat. An intercooler will usually be made up of fins that increase surface area on the component and this allows for quicker cooling which benefits the power of the vehicle.
